It is no novelty for Game of Thrones fans that the characters on the show tend to disappear for seasons altogether, entirely isolated from the action intensifying in Westeros. In fact, some of them even go on and DIE for a while, and then come back like nothing happened. Among all the characters we’ve seen playing this “now you see me, now you don’t” game, one is still majorly AWOL: Gendry.
Gendry. We do miss him a lot, don’t we? The last we saw of Robert’s ~secret~ bastard, was him taking leave of Ser Davos, and then rowing away in his boat for parts so far unknown to us. This was way back in Season 3. Now with Season 6 having recently had its finale and Season 7 looming closer, we’re starting to get slightly worried. Where on earth is Gendry?
Well, we can rest our ideations now, because we now have word from the makers of the epic show!
In an interview with the UFC Unfiltered Podcast, Dan Weiss and David Benioff had this to reveal about our favorite blacksmith:
Dan: “He’s still rowing.”
David: “Yes, he’s still rowing. It’s a long, a very long—”
Dan: “He’s coming up on Florida.”
David: “He’s getting in great shape. Think of the shape he’s in after rowing for four seasons.”
Alright, it’s not really a confirmed location, but at least there’s nothing about him dying — which would have been a major concern, as Gendry had already admitted that a) he can’t swim and 2) he’s never traveled by rowboat before.
If he’s still rowing, that means we can narrow down his location to the following general location: water!
