UEFA Euro 2016 France: Portugal Win Final For Cristiano Ronaldo

Euro 2016 France Semi Final 1If the final was to be described in one word, it would be ‘heartbreaking’; the game had the word written all over it. Heartbreak for Cristiano Ronaldo as a collision with Frenchman Dimitri Payet saw him stretchered off the field after a couple of futile attempts to continue playing. Heartbreak for the fans when they saw Ronaldo teary eyed, with the expression of a kid that has been denied its chance at playing party pinata on his birthday. Heartbreak on the faces of the Portuguese supporters as the French continued to dominate in the absence of Ronaldo. Heartbreak on the faces of the French nation, as Eder scored the only goal of the game in the 110th minute of the game, efficiently sealing Portugal’s first ever major trophy. And then there was jubilance in the Portuguese contingent, as their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo first showed glimpses of his mentoring from Sir Alex Ferguson on the touchline, and then roared in celebration in the stands at Stade de France on a night that failed its promise to the French.

The game started with Portugal slightly shaky at first, but just as they were beginning to find their feet, a collision between Payet and Ronaldo saw him go to ground, needing medical assistance. Ronaldo continued to limp on for 10 more minutes, before he tearfully asked his manager to substitute him in what was possibly the biggest game of his career. He was soon replaced by Quaresma, with Nani given the captain’s armband.

Portugal continued to defend with their lives, with Rui Patricio making some crucial saves to deny the hosts a lead. Blaise Matuidi and Antoine Griezmann came close to scoring, and Gignac in the dying stages of the game hit the post, but in the end, the game stayed goalless and went in to extra time.

The first half was again dominated by the French, but Portugal got their breakthrough five minutes into the second half when Eder struck a shot from almost 25 meters out to get the ball past Hugo Lloris’ extended arm, as the entire stadium erupted.

The lead was then threatened by more desperate attempts from France, but Portugal held on with their lives, and were finally paid for their patience as the referee blew the full time whistle.

This victory ended France’s winning streak in the last 10 competitive games against Portugal. Pepe was awarded the Man of the Match award for his rock solid performance at the back.

Euro 2016 Final Eve: France v Portugal – Live Streaming

euro 2016After more than a month of exciting football action with a few upsets thrown in here and there, the Euro 2016 is finally reaching its climax, and what a game to close the tournament! The final game of the tournament shall be played between hosts France and Portugal at the Stade de France at 8 pm (UTC +1:00).

France would go into the final as favorites to pip Portugal to the title, after several scintillating performances throughout the tournament. Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann currently leads the top scorer chart with 6 goals; his next competitors are teammates Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet, and final opponents Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, all at 3 goals apiece.

Portugal will have high hopes from talismanic captain Cristiano Ronaldo and forward Nani, to lead their attack from up front. After having not won a single game in regulation time till the quarter final, Portugal finally sneaked in a 2-0 victory against Wales in the semi final. The win will surely have boosted the team’s morale, and the men in maroon will be in high hopes for the final.

This is also the first time Cristiano Ronaldo will be representing his national side in a major tournament final. After a lustrous career riddled with both individual and team honors at Manchester United and Real Madrid, this is his chance to add a trophy to his national team’s cabinet.

Cristiano Ronaldo would also be looking forth to this final, after his rival Lionel Messi lost the Copa America Centenario Final last month, which caused him to announce a shock retirement. A trophy here would make Ronaldo a major contender for a 4th Ballon d’Or of his career, his third in 4 years.

Antoine Griezman and Cristiano Ronaldo met previously in the UEFA Champion’s League Final in Milan less than 2 months ago, where Real Madrid triumphed over their city rivals to win La Undecima.

Incidentally, Portugal have lost all of their last 10 games against France. The scene is poised for Ronaldo and Co. to either break this streak, or for the likes of Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann to continue it and have a trophy to say for it.

Wimbledon 2016: Gentlemen’s Final, Andy Murray v Milos Raonic

Wimbledon 2016After Serena Williams clinched the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title for this season yesterday, the field is now all set for the Gentlemen’s Singles Final today, to be played between Scotland’s Andy Murray and Canadian Milos Raonic at Centre Court shortly after 2 pm GMT.

Murray will go into the final as a fan favorite to win the title for the second time in his career, as he makes his third final appearance. The 29 year old reached the final after comprehensively beating Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych in the semi final 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. While Murray won’t face his rival Novak Djokovic, it will still be a challenge for him to face off against Raonic.

Milos Raonic made a stunning entry into the final after beating world no. 3 Roger Federer in a five set game that at one point of time looked in the Swiss veteran’s control. However, the Canadian went on to make a thrilling comeback in the final two sets, breaking a few records on his way and setting up a few himself.

Raonic became the first player to defeat Roger Federer in a Wimbledon semi final, who had so far had a 10-0 victory record. He also became the first Canadian to feature in a Grand Slam Final, and now stands a realistic chance to etch his name in the history of his nation as well as on the winners board at Wimbledon.

The game, as has been tradition, promises to have a prestigious array of spectators as well. With stalwarts such as Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham and Jeffrey Archer already spotted at matches, it is expected from more to attend the final of the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

Wimbledon 2016: Serena Williams Clinches 7th Wimbledon, 22nd Grand Slam Title

Wimbledon 2016Serena Williams equaled all time great Steffi Graf’s open-era record of most career Grand Slam Titles yesterday after beating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon Women’s Singles Final 7-5, 6-3. This was Williams’ 22nd Grand Slam title, her 7th at Wimbledon.

Perhaps it was destined for Williams to equal the German’s record by beating another German in the final, but it was according to the champion ‘one of the best games she has ever played’.

The victory must have tasted sweeter than most, since the American had gone close to the pinnacle in her last three Grand Slams, and was beaten by Kerber earlier in January in the Australian Open final. Having finally won the title at Wimbledon, she was pretty emotional and expressive.

“It’s been incredibly difficult not to think about it [the record],” said Williams, who just missed out on the calendar year grand slam last September after a defeat against Italian Roberta Vinci in the US Open semi finals.

Even on the brink of 35, the world no. 1 shows no signs of stopping any time soon, with 9 of her career grand slam titles coming after she turned 30, and will now be eyeing the ultimate record of 24 career grand slams, held by Australia’s Margaret Court.

Having won so many titles, it is understandable that Williams says she doesn’t remember most of them. “There are definitely some blurs between eight, nine and 10,” she said. “I don’t even know where eight, nine and 10 was, or when. I definitely don’t remember where 12 was. I remember one and two. I remember one through four. Gets really blurry after that. I will be able to definitely place this one. And 18. I struggled a little with 18. I can remember that one, too.”

Kerber, who shall rise to the No2 ranking on Monday, was understandably disappointed not to have won, but was also proud of the way she played. “I think I was not the one who lost the match – she won the match,” she said.

Wimbledon 2016: Raonic Stuns Federer To Proceed To Final

Wimbledon 2016History was created yesterday on the centre court at Wimbledon as 25-year old Milos Raonic became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final after beating Swiss ace Roger Federer 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 7-5 and 6-3. Raonic will face off against Andy Murray in the final on Sunday.

After a thrilling comeback in the quarter finals against Marin Cilic, Roger Federer finally faced defeat in a game that swayed both ways in alternate sets before Raonic emerged as winner. This also happened to be FedEx’s first defeat in a Wimbledon semi final. His record before yesterday had been 10 wins, 0 losses.

Perhaps it was the pressure of reaching the final, or the realization that he had beaten possibly the best of all time, that Raonic could only muster a gentle smile after winning the last set. “It’s an incredible comeback from me. I was struggling through the third and fourth sets. On a little opening I managed to turn it around. It was a great match,” reflected Raonic after the game.

It looked at one point as if Federer would go forth to play his 11th Wimbledon Final, but having failed to capitalize on the chances in the fourth set, Raonic had a realistic chance of beating the Swiss veteran to it. Federer, visibly distraught after the fourth set, seemed confident that he would be back next year.

“This one clearly hurts because I felt I could have had it,” said Federer. “It was really so, so close. At the same time I totally overachieved here.” This could come as a surprise for many fans, but Federer had had the first surgery of his career this season, after injuring his knee while bathing his daughters.

Milos Raonic will face Andy Murray in the final on Sunday, after the Scot defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets hours after Raonic’s victory.

Wimbledon 2016: Andy Murray Waltzes Into Final For The Third Time In Career

Wimbledon 2016Only a couple of hours after Roger Federer’s exit in the semi finals of the Wimbledon against Canadian Milos Raonic, Scotsman Andy Murray gave the fans something to cheer about as he defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

With this victory, Murray has now reached his 11th final in the four Grand Slam Tournaments, and will be a favorite in the final against 25-year-old Raonic.

The Centre Court at Wimbledon was a cheerier sight after this result, especially after many fans right from ex Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson to renowned author Jeffrey Archer seemed visibly distraught at Federer’s exit from the tournament. This was Federer’s first defeat in the semi finals of the Wimbledon, after having won all 10 of his last semi final appearances.

Murray was right on the money in his 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory, and looked in the best shape of his career so far. At 29, the world no. 2, with Ivan Lendl to back him, looks poised to clinch the second Wimbledon title of his career, after having won the tournament previously in 2013.

“The fact that probably his biggest rival, Novak, is not in the draw any more definitely helps him,” said Berdych after the game. “He has the tools to go all the way. Andy is one of the best in eliminating the big weapon of an opponent. I think he actually likes to play the big guys, to come up with his creative game, try to break their rhythm.”

Murray currently has an edge over his final opponent Milos Raonic 6-3, with the latest win coming in the Queen’s Final less than a month ago.

The final will be played on Sunday at Centre Court.

Euro 2016 France: Hosts Proceed To Final

euro 2016Football can be cruel. That’s what Bastian Schweinsteiger and his contingent would have realized after the 0-2 defeat last night to hosts France in the Euro 2016 semi final. A goal on either side of halftime from Antoine Griezmann saw the French reach the final, to be played against Portugal on the 11th of July.

In a game that saw the Germans enjoy a whopping 68% ball possession, it was the French who prevailed, after first taking a lead through a penalty just before half time and then doubling the lead in the 72nd minute.

This happened to be the first time since 1958 that France have beaten Germany at a major tournament.

The Germans had a stuttering start, but upped their game quickly, and dominated the game for most parts. Germany coach Joachim Löw maintained that they were the better team and the players did everything he had asked them to, but for converting the chances.

France coach Didier Deschamps, on the other hand, was full of delight and praise for his players, and for the German side as well.

“We haven’t only had easy games. Germany were and are still the best side. We did what we needed to do. We were clinical, and Lloris was great when we needed him to be”, he said.

With two goals, man of the match Antoine Griezmann has now raced to the top of the goal scorer chart with 6 goals in the tournament so far. The next in line are Olivier Giroud, Dimitri Payet, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani (all with 3 goals), all of whom could feature in the final.

The final will be played between hosts France and Portugal on the 11th of July at the Stade de France.
