They have made a use of the genetic scoring technique to predict reading performance through DNA alone. The research study shows that a genetic score comprising around 20,000 of DNA variants explains 5 percent of the differences between the reading performance of children. According to the research conducted, students with the highest and lowest genetic scores differed by a whole two years in their reading performance. The findings from King’s College London highlight the potential of using genetic scores to determine strengths and weaknesses in children’s learning abilities.

It is found that genetic scores explained up to 5 percent of the differences between children in their reading ability. Even after accounting for cognitive ability and family socio-economic status, the association remained very important.

Saskia Selzam, from King’s College London, said, “The value of polygenic scores is that they make it possible to predict genetic risk and resilience at the level of the individual.” “This is different to twin studies, which tell us about the overall genetic influence within a large population of people”, Selzam further added. “These scores could alter the research on resilience to develop reading difficulties and how children will give response individually to different participation,” said Selzam. “We think these findings will provide better policy decisions that recognize and respect genetically driven differences between children in their reading ability,” said Robert Plomin, from King’s College London.

Some of these genetic variants, known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), are more strongly associated with the trait, and some are less strongly associated. In a polygenic score, the results of these SNPs are weighed by the strength of association and then summed to a score, so that people with many SNPs related to academic achievement will have a higher polygenic score and higher academic achievement, whereas people with fewer associated SNPs will have a lower score and lower levels of academic achievement.

Our data-driven society is agitating out more information than traditional storage technology can handle, so scientists are looking for a solution in Nature’s hard drive: DNA. According to a study published in the latest edition of Science, a pair of researchers at the New York Genome Center and Columbia University recently wrote a full computer operating system, an 1895 French film, an Amazon gift card and other files into DNA strands and retrieved them without errors.

There are several advantages of using DNA. It’s a lot smaller than traditional media; a single gram can accommodate 215,000 times more data than a one terabyte hard drive, The Atlantic notes. It’s also improbably durable. But, till now, they’ve only unlocked a fraction of its storage capacity. Study coauthors Dina Zielinski and Yaniv Erlich were able to fit the theoretical maximum amount of data per nucleotide using a new method inspired by how movies stream across the internet.

Erlich explained in an interview with Research Gate, “We mapped the bits of the files to DNA nucleotides. Then, we combine these nucleotides and store the molecules in a test-tube. To retrieve the data, we sequenced the molecules. This is the basic process. To pack the data, we devised a strategy called DNA Fountain that uses mathematical concepts from coding theory. It was this strategy that allowed us to achieve optimal packing, which was the most challenging view of the study.”

When Netflix, an online streaming service sends information, it uses fountain codes, which divides the data into small packets. Netflix can reconstruct the entire stream even if few packets are lost. DNA has a similar problem; scientists can only create and sequence it in small batches. This means that large amounts of data need to be broken down, and bits of them can be lost. It breaks down after sequencing, which means the information is lost the more it’s read. Luckily, DNA is easy to replicate.

Although companies like Microsoft are currently looking into DNA as a storage option, Erlich calculates it’ll be more than a decade before it goes mainstream. “We are still in early days, but it also took magnetic media years of research and development before it became useful.”
