Francis Ford Coppola Comments On George Lucas

Francis Ford CoppolaWith the release of the latest Star Wars films, fans of the [early] franchise are hoping that long-time king of nerd-dom J.J. Abrams can helm the ship to a far more interesting and suitable experience than the prequels did.

Indeed, many agree that George Lucas seems to have lost his touch when he made the second three Star Wars movie (which, of course, is the first three in the narrative timeline).
But Francis Ford Coppola, apparently, wants to give the one-time visionary director some credit.

Indeed, George Lucas did, at one time, have inspiring ideas about what moviemakers could actually do. The original Star Wars trilogy was a triumph in storytelling, in directing, and in movie making as a whole. It changed the way many made films—especially those without the money to buy or develop expensive technology.

Coppola, though, while talking with the press at the Marrakech International Film Festival, the celebrated Godfather director discussed his opinion on the future of cinema. Fortunately, he predicts that the next generation of artists will be part of “daring” experimentation in this field.
Of course they will; technology is highly accessible; and crowdfunding makes it easier to get better investment options.

But more importantly, this discussion led, obviously, to Coppola’s long-time friend-and-rival George Lucas; the conversation turning a little sour in regards to some Lucas’ choices.

Coppola responds with grace: “I think Star Wars, it’s a pity, because George Lucas was a very experimental crazy guy and he got lost in this big production and never got out of it. I still hope that he made so much money out of it that he will just make some little movies. He promises me that he will.”
Lets hope, then, he stays true to his roots.

The Hills Star Michael Cavallari Confirmed Dead

Kristin+Cav+BrotherOnly three days after Kristin Cavallari and her family reported him missing, former “The Hills” star Michael Cavallari has been found and pronounced dead.

According to a statement from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, “At approximately 10:30 a.m. search crews located remains believed to be that of Michael Cavallari. At this time, the body is being transported to the Office of the Utah Medical Examiner for positive identification and to determine the cause of death.

The search crews were searching the Salt Wash area, near exit 175 on I-70 in Grand County. The terrain where the body was located is a steep and very rocky area.”

His whereabouts had initially raised concern when his 2014 Honda Civic was spotted, abandoned, along the I-70, in Utah, on November 27th.

Police managed to identify that he had been driving in the area around the same time the auto was found abandoned by looking at security footage from a local convenience store.

Reaching out to fans and public outcry, Kristin Cavallari said, in a statement to E! News: “We want to thank everyone for their love, support and prayers during this very difficult time. We have just been informed by the authorities my brother’s body has been found. This is a very painful time and we are still processing it all. We kindly ask everyone please respect our privacy during our time of grieving.”
In the caption of a childhood photo of her family at the ocean, which she posted to Instagram, she notes, “I appreciate all the concern, thoughts, and prayers that have been extended to me and my family. We remain hopeful and I will share any news that we receive. I have such gratitude for all those that have shared their support.”

Sylvester Stallone Finally Gets Another Golden Globe Nomination, For Creed

sylvester-stalloneHe may be one of the most memorable faces—and voices—in Hollywood but while his resume is filled with one iconic role after another Sylvester Stallone has not been “critically” recognized that often for his talent. So when Stallone received his Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe nomination, on Thursday, for his role in Creed, it was a bit of a shock to him.

It was only quite an incredible honor. You see, the only other time Sylvester Stallone was nominated for a Golden Globe (as well as an Oscar) was for his lead role in the film he wrote, Rocky.

Released in 1976, Rocky tells the story of an underdog plucked from obscurity to defy the odds and become a champion. Perhaps inspired by the real life story of Chuck Wepner, the tale of Rocky mirrors that of Stallone’s own climb to the top of the industry.

Born with a defect that caused his speech impediment, Sylvester Stallone did not have it easy as an actor trying to break big into the movie industry. But at 30-years old he did not let anything deter him and, after selling everything he owned—including his dog—the man lived on passion alone.

This passion finally paid off in the form of “Rocky,” one of the most successful Best Picture Winners of all time. The film also won for Best Director and Best Editing; Stallone was nominated for Best Actor (and Best Original Screenplay).

It has taken 39 years for Stallone to release 5 more Rocky films. While none were as critically received as the first, all have been widely successful.

Creed is the first “spin-off” film but, more importantly, is the first to find Stallone again nominated for a much deserved award, which recognizes not only his tremendous work in this film, but perhaps paying homage, a bit, to his entire body of work.

First Person Sarah Silverman Told About her SAG nomination

Sarah SilvermanWhen her manager, Amy Zvi, called her to inform the comedienne-turned-actress about her very first SAG nomination, Sarah Silverman could not believe the news. In fact, she says, she thought this phone call was going to take a very grave turn right from the start.

Indeed, she told People magazine, “I answered the phone and she was sobbing. I thought somebody died.” Of course, that was not the case at all, as Zvi was calling to let Silverman know that she just got thenod for her impressive dramatic undertaking in “I Smile Back.”

Silverman goes on to say that she had not even known the nominations were going to be announced that day. As a matter of fact, the only reason she was awake to answer the phone was her commitment to attend the Women in Entertainment Breakfast hosted by The Hollywood Reporter.

In her trademark sarcasm she quipped, “I feel like I’m kind of slumming it being in the company of, like Dame Helen Mirren and Cate Blanchett and all those hacks,” referring, of course, to the other “Female Actor in a Leading Role” nominees, this year. “But yeah, I’m totally in shock,” she attests.

So, of course, you would think this is the kind of news that one would want to blab about to every last person under the sun; but not Silverman, apparently. She says, “I didn’t tell anybody. You learn early in Hollywood not to share your wares or brag. My mom died in August, but I email her good news, so I emailed her. On my birthday I wrote her a really long email and today, I found a picture of the list of names, the five names [of the nominated actresses] and I sent her the picture and I said, ‘I got nominated! And I miss you;’ it’s so corny.”

Meghan Trainor Distributes Women In Entertainment Mentorship Program Scholarships

Meghan TrainorIn the seven years that the Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program has been in operation, it has raised more than $2.4 million in scholarships. The joint national non profit Big Brothers/Sisters program(s) chooses upwards of 20 young ladies from inner-city schools every year and pairs them with a top-level female executive in the entertainment business.

These students, then, begin the program as juniors in high school—in some of the toughest high schools in Los Angeles—and receive incredible, life-changing mentorship one afternoon every two weeks with these mentors.

Each year, The Hollywood Reporter hosts the Women in Entertainment Breakfast. Now in its 24th iteration, this year’s festivities took place on Wednesday, Dec 9 at Milk Studios in LA. After an inspiring and emotional video highlighting the qualities and achievements of the 15 girls who are just about to graduate from the program, the recently Grammy Award-winning singer of “All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor took the microphone to announce the three scholarship winners, who would leave the night with college scholarships totaling more than $600,000.

Quite glib, Trainor announced “It’s such an honor to be here,” adding, “I gotta say two things before I start. One, I gotta pee so bad. Two: Melinda [Gates], you’re such a boss.” Quickly to follow, though, she handed out the first full-ride scholarship on behalf of LMU to Victoria Arevalo. Next, she handed out an impressive $100,000 scholarship to Larissa Ramirez.

She then announced, “LMU was so impressed with this year’s mentees, it agreed to fully fund a third scholarship. This is the final one. That’s it. This is the final scholarship of the day,” handing the award to Laura Espita, from the LMU School of Film and TV.

Chef and Author Nigella Lawson Cautions “Clean Eating” Could Be an “Eating Disorder”

\\Nigella Lawson BookNigella Lawson says that people who demand that ‘clean eating’ is the only way to live are probably hiding an eating disorder.

Earlier this week, at the JW3 Speaker Series, in London, she proclaimed,
“People are using certain diets as a way to hide an eating disorder or a great sense of unhappiness and unease with their own body,” adding, “There is a way in which food is used either to self congratulate—you’re a better person because you’re eating like that—or to self-persecute, because you’ll not allow yourself to eat the foods you want.”

It rightly seems like an odd argument for the author of “The Simply Nigella” who guides fans of her book and cooking show(s) towards simple and healthy meal ideas. But apparently her mother struggled with an eating disorder in the past and her vocalization is more an outburst towards an unhealthy eating culture than, necessarily, at specific nutrition trends.

For example, she explains that complimenting a person on their weight loss often only feeds the mistaken idea that “skinny is better.”

She continues, “I generally think it is not food if it is through that being thinner is always better. What happens as a result is that somehow you are seen as a better person. If you are naturally thin, that is fantastic, but if you have to starve yourself to be thin, it is not good to encourage people to be in that shape because it is not good for you.”

Lawson shares the story of her discovery of her mother’s eating disorder after her untimely death at the young age of 48. “I kind of put two and two together. I knew she had a thing about thinness but I worked it out later. When she was dying she allowed herself to eat. To wait until you’ve got a terminal disease to enjoy eating is an awful thing.”

But does she have an answer, then? Well, she says: moderation. “There are times when you need a slice of cake. You don’t eat it every day, but life has to be balanced and not too restricted.”
