Marriott, the top ranked hotel, is planning to equip their rooms with the digital assistants which are voice-activated digital assistants.
In order to do this, Marriott is deciding between Amazon’s Alexa, which triggers Echo range of smartphones and the Apple’s Siri, the proprietary voice assistant designed for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV.
According to Bloomberg report, Marriott International Inc. is experimenting both Alexa-powered and Siri-powered devices to decide which one will best suit their needs, for instance, letting guests turn on lights, close drapes, increase or decrease room temperature and even navigate through TV channels with the help of voice.
Marriott is trying to decide between Alexa and Siri
Leading tech companies are leveraging hotel rooms and public lodging places as pseudo-show floors to display the capabilities of voice assistants and smart home technology, states Bloomberg. Both Apple and Amazon are leading industries in smart voice assistants and its integrations. Digital assistants allow users to control the household activities like heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and entertainment.
Marriott has not yet decided which virtual assistant it will choose, but it hopes to adapt and integrate the selected technology into one or more of its chains in mid of the year.
How will this work for Marriott?
The move by the hotel is being compared to the inclusion of iPhone docking stations into hotel rooms earlier, to allow users charge their iPhone and listen to music at the same time. Installing the docking stations inside rooms is a much simpler than adding full-fledged digital butlers that are based on voice commands of the guests. Of important question is that would guests be able to access their account to use Alexa or Siri.
A growth opportunity
As it is seen that Alexa is the choice voice assistant designed for smart speakers, seen as ahead of Google, Apple, and Microsoft, Siri could have a leg up over the competition due to its multiple language support.
Whichever technology it will select, it will be included as a staple element of something that will be widely accessible to everyone across the world.
