The Heartburn Drugs Are Major Culprit Behind Early Death

Heartburn is the common disorder faced by many people in which the stomach acids are sent back into the esophagus which causes burning sensation in the chest. To tackle this problem many people, take medications which may put them at risk of early death.

The experts recommend that people suffering from heartburn should first consult the medical expert before taking such drugs on their own. If such drugs are consumed regularly for 5 or more years it increases the chances of death. The commonly used drug called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are consumed by many people and it is easily available in the store.

The recent study conducted by the researchers from Washington University School of Medicine have shown the negative effects of this which can cause death. The risk of diseases like kidney disease, stomach disorders, heart disorders, pneumonia, dementia can be caused by the intake of PPIs.

The PPIs drugs are the most common type of heartburn drug that can cause death compared to other drugs which are used to relieve pain. Other common drugs which are used to relieve heartburn are Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and many others. They are used to treat the diseases like heartburn, ulcers, gastrointestinal problems and weak bones.

During the study, the researchers analyzed the medical records of more than 275,000 individuals who were using PPI and other 75,000 of them which were used for lowering the stomach acid. The data included the health records of more 6 million individuals from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The people who consumed PPIs were at 25% high risk of death compared to non-PPIs consumers. Also, the people who regularly consumed PPIs for more than one or two years were had 50% higher risk of death.

Even if you suffer from heartburn the PPIs you should consume these drugs only for short duration and not for a year or two.
